This week in Tigers Class: Week beginning 8th June 2026

In English/Literacy this week, as authors, we will be practicing our handwriting skills. This will include lots of fine motor control, hand strengthening exercises and letter formation practice. We will be concentrating on correct starting and finishing places and making ascenders and descenders obvious.

In Phonics this week –

All of the children will be consolidating the sounds and phonic skills they have learned this academic year, in preparation for moving onto the next chapter of the scheme, as appropriate, in September. This will involve a selection of reading, spelling and matching activities.

In Maths this week, as mathematicians-

Group one will be focusing on positional language through model building.
Group two will be looking at number stories and singing counting rhymes.
Group three will be focusing on part whole models and using these to find totals.
Group four will be focusing on recognising coins, using coins to make totals and calculating change.
Group five will be counting in 2s.

Also this week…

We are continuing our new curriculum, which incorporates a greater amount of sensory exercises and activities to encourage more shared attention. Our enquiry is titled Looking after ourselves. This will involve thinking about the different ways to keep ourselves healthy. We will be thinking about the foods that we should eat, as well as the importance of being active, practicing good hygiene and the ways in which we can keep ourselves safe.

This week is all about the importance of good hygiene.

We are swimming this term on Wednesdays so please remember named swimming kits – thank you.

We will be singing and using percussion instruments to keep to the pulse of the music as well as climbing, jumping, balancing, passing and catching in PE. May I remind Tigers parents that the children should come to school in their PE kit Thursdays. Please could this be dark coloured joggers, a green or white polo shirt and their school jumper. Thank you.

All children have a reading book which they bring home each day to practice at home. They will also look at this book with an adult in school twice a week in addition to our class reading sessions, story times and phonics lessons. This book will be changed approximately once a week, as appropriate. Thank you for writing in the yellow reading record each time you share a book with your child, whether it is their school book or a home or library book. We will also record when your child has read in school.

Story Suitcases:

The children will have an opportunity to take this resource home twice a year and can keep it to look at for up to a week. It contains a story, props and a diary for the children to write or draw what they liked about the story.

Book Changes:

The children will read with an adult twice a week. Their reading books are changed weekly. They will bring home a Phonics Shed reading book and another book that is not part of our scheme to be shared at home. Please sign your child’s yellow Reading Record each time you hear them read at home. This way, they will earn raffle tickets for a prize draw in December, Easter and July.

Maths Passports

We encourage children in Tigers to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:

On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.
