words-for-childrenThis week in Leopards Class: Week beginning 18.11.25

In English this week, as authors, we are learning to use adverbials and dialogue to develop or narrative writing skills.

In Spelling this week, as authors, our spelling focus will be words ending in ent and ency

As mathematicians, we will be using our skills in fraction. Converting mixed number to improper fraction and comparing fractions.

The children can access ‘Spelling Shed’ using their individualized username and password. Here is a link to the website https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/

Your child can use Spelling Shed to access a range of activities linked to the spelling rules and patterns they are learning in school. The following template, showing spelling strategies we use in class, may be useful when practising at home:

WOW WORDS
As authors, we develop our vocabulary by using ‘Wow’ words. These are words generated from our Whole Class Reading sessions and this week we have focussed on finding synonyms for our Wow words . This week’s Wow words:

Also this week… We are starting our new enquiry – What is the impact of too little water?

It is that time of year to start learning the words for the Christmas performance.

Here are the words to help.

Reading

Our class book is Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce

Our weekly visits to the school library take place on Thursday.

We do all we can at Greentrees to share our love of reading. This includes sharing book recommendations with our friends. Please use the book review template if you read a book that you think someone else would enjoy. These may be included in our weekly Newsletter or termly Reading Round-up.

Celebration Assemblies

In our weekly Celebration Assemblies at each site, we present awards, certificates or stickers for the following:

  • Learner of the Week
  • Birthdays
  • Team Point Milestones
  • Golden Mile
  • Pen Licences

You are very welcome to join us for these assemblies in support of your child.

Maths Passports

We encourage children in Leopards to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:

We endeavour to check Maths Passports as often as possible.

On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.

P.E

Our P.E days are Tuesdays and Thursday.

Home Learning

In Year 5, Home Learning for spellings and maths is set each Monday on Spelling Shed and Mathletics. In addition, children are expected to read daily. We have decided to send the Spelling homework home in the form of a sheet to complete. Your child is welcome to still use Ed Shed to practise but the homework is the sheet.

Please see the link below for this term’s additional and optional Home Learning activities:

During Term 2, we would appreciate all pupils doing their best to learn the lyrics to the songs from our forthcoming Junior Christmas Production as additional Home Learning. Click here to access these.

Supporting your Child at Home

eBooks can be accessed by parents for free if you register on the Oxford Owl website.

Your child should know the multiplication table that they are currently working on and can practise their recall within 6 seconds here.

Additional online resources to practise times tables can be found here and here.
