This week in Toucans Class: Week beginning 15th June 2026
In English this week, as Authors, we will finish our non-chronological reports about our fantasy creatures using 3rd person, headings and subheadings, conjunctions, commas in a list and all the punctuation we have been taught in year 3. We will also recap how to use inverted commas when writing direct speech.
This week, we are learning to spell words ending with the suffix -sion. This week our words are: division, confusion, collision, invasion, decision and television.
Your child can use Spelling Shed to access a range of activities linked to the spelling rules and patterns they are learning in school. The children can access ‘Spelling Shed’ using their individualised username and password. Here is a link to the website https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/
The following template, showing spelling strategies we use in class, may be useful when practising at home:

WOW WORDS
As Authors, we develop our vocabulary by using ‘Wow’ words. These are words generated from our Whole Class Reading sessions. Our wow words this week are: sweltering, unearthed, peculiar and rival.
In Maths this week, as Mathematicians, we will recap our learning from throughout year 3, in preparation for our assessments.
Also this week…
We will continue our enquiry ‘How does science help up in our daily lives?’. We will learn about the non contact force of magnetism and explore how magnetism acts. We will learn which materials are magnetic and also identify how magnetism helps us in our daily lives.
Reading
This term, our reading for pleasure text is ‘The 13 Storey Treehouse’, by Andy Griffiths. If anyone has a copy of this text at home, please feel free to bring it along to read in class.

Our weekly visits to the school library take place on Friday
We do all we can at Greentrees to share our love of reading. This includes sharing book recommendations with our friends. Please use the book review template if you read a book that you think someone else would enjoy. These may be included in our weekly Newsletter or termly Reading Round-up.
Reading for Pleasure
In Year 3, we get to know the following books really well. These are the stories that we can choose from our reading area to read for pleasure.

You are very welcome to join us for these assemblies in support of your child.
Maths Passports
We encourage children in Toucans to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:

We endeavour to check Maths Passports as often as possible.
On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.
P.E
Our P.E days are Mondays (inside) and Wednesdays (outside).
Home Learning
In Year 3, Home Learning for spellings and maths is set each Friday on Spelling Shed and Mathletics. In addition, children are expected to read daily.
