This week in Panthers Class: Week beginning 6th July 2026
We will be continuing to immerse in our new enquiry ‘Where does our food really come from? We will be focusing on our map skills, learning some of the OS map symbols and using grid references. We will continue exploring different brush strokes in art, using Vincent van Gogh for inspiration. In addition, in cookery club, Group 2 will be making…? (I really don’t know!)
In English this week, as authors, Group 1 will be writing a balanced argument. Group 2 will finish their information writing, using the story of Amelia Earhart, the American aviator and explorer.
In Spelling this week, we will be looking at our Spelling Shed words for the week. We will have our learning input on Monday when we look at the spelling patterns and meanings. Each morning children will have a task based on an individualised list from these words and words from the Common Exception Word list appropriate for their level. Children will also have Spelling Shed Games assigned to them which they can practise at home and school. Children’s list of 6 words to learn will be in their contact book as these are individual. They will be assessed each Monday.

Your child can use Spelling Shed to access a range of activities linked to the spelling rules and patterns they are learning in school. The following template, showing spelling strategies we use in class, may be useful when practising at home:

WOW WORDS
As authors, we develop our vocabulary by using ‘Wow’ words. These are words generated from our Group Reading sessions. Group 1 will be reading another example of a balanced argument in readiness to write their own. Group 2 will be working on their phonics and spelling activities, concentrating on split digraphs.
In Maths this week, as mathematicians, we will be integrating into our different classes in main school. Please see the page of the class your child integrates into for maths to view their learning for this week. Mrs Smith will be working with her group on Shape. We will be learning more about 3D shapes this week, sorting and making sequences and patterns. We will use the language about properties of shape.

We have a poet, Neal Zetter, into school on Tuesday. He will be delivering an assembly in the morning, followed by workshops throughout the year groups. Do look at his website: https://www.cccpworkshops.co.uk/poems/

Reading
This term, we will be reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction picture books around the theme of food and farming. One of the groups will be reading ‘The Boy who Sailed the World’.
Our weekly visits to the school library take place on Tuesday.
We do all we can at Greentrees to share our love of reading. This includes sharing book recommendations with our friends. Please use the book review template if you read a book that you think someone else would enjoy. These may be included in our weekly Newsletter or termly Reading Round-up. Children in Panthers class are currently enjoying: The 13-storey Tree House series, Star Wars and non-fiction books about bugs, reptiles and amphibians.

Celebration Assemblies
In our weekly Celebration Assemblies at each site, we present awards, certificates or stickers for the following:
- Learner of the Week
- Birthdays
- Team Point Milestones
- Golden Mile
- Pen Licences
You are very welcome to join us for these assemblies in support of your child.
Maths Passports
We encourage children in Panthers to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:
We endeavour to check Maths Passports as often as possible.
On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.
P.E
Our P.E days this term are Mondays (outdoor) with a PE coach who will be introducing us to Soft Cricket, and Thursdays (gymnastics in the hall). Please provide a green t-shirt, black shorts and trainers.
Home Learning
In Panthers, Home Learning for spellings is set each Monday. Individual spellings will be in your child’s contact book. In addition, please also try to read at least 3 times a week. Weekly Spelling Shed activities are also set.
Children are also strongly encouraged to practise Multiplication Tables. Mathsframe is a good resource to support this. Mathletics activities are also set for pupils to complete.
Supporting your Child at Home
eBooks can be accessed by parents for free if you register on the Oxford Owl website.
Your child should know the multiplication table that they are currently working on and can practise their recall within 6 seconds here.
