This week in Orangutans Class: Week beginning 13th July 2026

We can’t believe we are heading into the last full week of year 1!

Here is Phonics Joe:

As authors we will be recapping our knowledge of chapter 2, 3, 4a and 4b phonemes.

WOW WORDS

As authors, we develop our vocabulary by using ‘WOW’ words. These are words generated from our Whole Class Reading sessions. We will be exploring the text Penpals Forever by CK Smouha & J Lindenberger and finding out the meaning of horrified, shady, homesick and cosy.

As authors, we will be using our plans to write our own fantasy stories based on the text Penpals Forever.

As mathematicians we will be continuing our unit on time. We will be learning to tell the time to the half hour.

Also this week…

We will enjoy having visitors for our new enquiry ‘What might I be in the future?‘ and exploring flip books in preparation for making our own.

We will also enjoy the talent show on Wednesday and meeting our new teacher on Thursday afternoon!

Our role play area is a UK tourist centre.

Reading

Our weekly visits to the school library take place on Tuesday so please ensure your book is in school to swap that day.

Story Suitcases:

Each Friday, a pupil is chosen to take home a Story Suitcase. Inside the case, there is a story book, a book review notepad and a story prop. We ask that an adult read the story aloud to promote the love of reading. Children may enjoy using the prop to engage with the story while listening to it, or to re-enact it afterwards. We ask that the story suitcase is returned to school on Monday morning.

Book Changes:

Children will have books changed once a week on the following day:

Monday – Chestnuts

Tuesday – Limes

Wednesday – Oaks

Thursday – Sycamores

Reading for Pleasure:

In Year 1, we get to know the following books really well. We have a daily story vote to choose the book that is read to us!

‘What is it like to live in the UK?’ involves us being geographers and artists.

Celebration Assemblies

In our weekly Celebration Assemblies at each site, we present awards, certificates or stickers for the following:

You are very welcome to join us for these assemblies in support of your child.

Maths Passports

We encourage children in Orangutans to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:

We endeavour to check Maths Passports as often as possible.

On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.

P.E

Our P.E days are Mondays and Wednesdays.

Home Learning

As well as reading, phonic flashcards, high frequency words (animal cards, to read and spell), maths passport activities and Mathletics, we send home a home learning activity every other Wednesday. This will be emailed, added to our class page and posted on Tapestry.

Wednesday 24th June

Our enquiry is ‘What is it like to live in the UK?’ and as geographers, we have been finding out about the 4 countries which make up the UK and their capital cities, symbols, landmarks and the surrounding seas. We launched this at the beginning of term by ‘visiting’ each country to find out about it.

For our home learning this week, we have sent home a map of the UK and we would like you to discuss with your family the countries, their capitals, any landmarks you know and the names of the surrounding seas.

If you have visited any of these countries and/or the capital cities or have any friends or family members who live there and have any photographs you can share with us we would love to add them to our map of the UK on our enquiry board. You can send any photos and/or information in with your child or email them to us.

We also love singing our UK song and here is the link incase you might like a performance at home – enjoy!

Wednesday 10th June

As Mathematicians, we have been comparing 2 digit numbers. For your home learning this week it would be fantastic if you could continue to do this at home. Try some of the following activities and use the 100 square in your Maths packs to support you:

Explore the activities on this website Comparing numbers to 100 Maths – Learning with BBC Bitesize – BBC Bitesize
With a partner, write the digits 0-9 and the symbols <, > on some bits of paper and select 2 bits of paper each to make a 2-digit number. Use the symbols to show which number is greater or less.
With a partner, use the digits 0-9 you made above and take it in turns to select 2 numbers to make a 2-digit number e.g. 3 and 7 so you have 37 or 73. Score a point if you have the greatest number. The first to 10 points wins! Ensure your child understands that the number with the greatest amount of 10s will be the greatest number.
Play guess my number using Paint the Squares – Interactive Number Charts (topmarks.co.uk). Pick a 2 digit number and your partner has to ask questions about the number of 10s and 1s in your number to guess it.
Notice 2 digit numbers around you in the environment and ask your child how many 10s/1s in the number and which is greater/less etc

Wednesday 6^th May

As authors, we will be learning about poetry during the last week of this term. As part of this learning, we would like the children to choose and learn a poem to perform at school! You could choose a nursery rhyme or a short poem to learn. You may be able to learn it off by heart or you can read it and we will be on hand to help if needed. You could bring in any props or a costume to enhance your performance.

We will be having our poetry recitals during the last week of term beginning on:

Monday 18^th May for the Chestnuts,

Tuesday 19^th May for the Limes,

Wednesday 20th May for the Oaks

Thursday 21st for the Sycamores

Home Learning 22^nd April 2026

As mathematicians, we are learning to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10. For our home learning, please practise this and the following activities will help:

Count aloud in steps of 2, 5 and 10. You can use the 100square in your Maths Packs to help support this or use Paint the Squares – Interactive Number Charts (topmarks.co.uk). Your child can count aloud by themselves and/or with you and other members of the family. For example, at dinner time around the table or when in the car/walking to school so you each take a turn to say the next number.
Use paper/felt pens/colouring pens or chalk on a patio or a paint brush with water on a patio to record the numbers when counting in 2s, 5s or 10s.

Use 2ps, 5ps and 10ps to practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. You can play shops with some items at home where items cost 2p or 4p or 6p etc. How many 2ps do you need to buy something which is 6p? How many 10p do you need to but something which is 50p? etc
