School Nursing Team

The School Nursing Service ensures that all children and young people in Wiltshire’s schools, colleges, and academies have access to a school nurse. The service provides information, advice, and support to school-aged children, young people, and their families.

What the School Nursing Service Does

School nurses play a vital role in supporting children and families. They:

• Promote public health and encourage healthy lifestyles

• Help to safeguard children and reduce risk-taking behaviours

• Provide health education and advice in schools and communities

• Take part in national campaigns and initiatives (e.g. the National Child Measurement Programme)

• Deliver the national childhood immunisation programme

• Offer school-based health clinics

• Support children and young people with complex medical needs

How to Refer to the Service

Referrals can be made by:

• Parents and carers

• Children and young people themselves (self-referral)

• Education staff

• GPs

• Social care and other professionals

What Happens Next?

Once a referral (or self-referral) is received, a school nurse will contact the young person through school. If additional information is needed, or if it is helpful to speak with parents/carers, this will be arranged before meeting the child in school.

The service works in partnership with families and other professionals to ensure children and young people receive the right support at the right time.
