School Nursing Team

The School Nursing Service ensures that all children and young people attending schools, colleges and academies in Wiltshire have access to a school nurse. The service provides information, advice and support to school-aged children, young people and their families.

What Does the School Nursing Service Do? 

School nurses play an important role in supporting the health and wellbeing of children and young people. They:

• Promote healthy lifestyles and positive health choices.

• Help to safeguard children and reduce risk-taking behaviours.

• Provide health education, advice and support in schools and local communities.

• Contribute to national health programmes and initiatives, including the National Child Measurement Programme.

• Deliver the childhood immunisation programme.

• Offer school-based health clinics and support.

• Support children and young people with complex medical needs.

How to Access the Service

Referrals can be made by:

• Parents and carers

• Children and young people themselves (self-referral)

• School staff

• GPs

• Social care professionals and other agencies

What Happens Next?

Once a referral (or self-referral) has been received, a school nurse will make contact through the school. If additional information is required, or if it would be helpful to speak with parents or carers, this will usually take place before meeting with the child in school.

The School Nursing Service works in partnership with families, schools and other professionals to ensure children and young people receive the right support at the right time.
