This week in Scorpions Class: Week beginning Monday 6th July 2026
This week, we will be continuing to prepare for our Year 6 leavers assembly. As mathematicians, we will be making boxes using nets and solving problems with money and measures. As part of our enquiry, we will be looking how animals adapt to their environment.
Your child can use Spelling Shed to access a range of activities linked to the spelling rules and patterns they are learning in school. The children can access ‘Spelling Shed’ using their individual username and password. Here is a link to the website https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/

This weeks spellings are: overthrow, overcoat, overpaid, overcook, overbalance,overlooked, overslept, overreact, overtired and overturned.

WOW WORDS
As Authors, we develop our vocabulary by using ‘Wow’ words. These are words generated from our Whole Class Reading sessions. This week’s words include: fiddle, shanty, candelabra, accompaniment, teetering and marooning.
Home Learning
On a Monday, the children will be set a spelling, grammar and arithmetic piece of home learning. This will have a week to complete these.
Reading
This term, our class text is Darwin’s Dragons by Lindsay Galvin. If anyone has a copy of this at home, please feel free to bring it into school to read along.
Our weekly visits to the school library take place on Monday.
We do all we can at Greentrees to share our love of reading. This includes sharing book recommendations with our friends. Please use the book review template if you read a book that you think someone else would enjoy. These may be included in our weekly Newsletter or termly Reading Round-up.

In Year 6, we get to know the following books really well. These are the stories that we can choose from our reading area to read for pleasure.

Our enquiry in Term 5 is “How do the clothes we wear impact the planet?”
This enquiry involves us being Geographers, Engineers and Environmentalists.

SATs
Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) are taken by Year 6 pupils in May every year.
This year, SATs will be completed between Monday 11th and Thursday 14th May.
The timetable is as follows:
Monday 11th May: Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers 1 and 2
Tuesday 12th May: English Reading
Wednesday 13th May: Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic) and Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning)
Thursday 14th May: Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning)

Celebration Assemblies
In our weekly Celebration Assemblies at each site, we present awards, certificates or stickers for the following:
- Learner of the Week
- Birthdays
- Team Point Milestones
- Golden Mile
- Pen Licences
You are very welcome to join us for these assemblies in support of your child.
Maths Passports
We encourage children in Scorpions to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:
We endeavour to check Maths Passports as often as possible.
On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.
P.E
Our P.E days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Swimming will take place on a Tuesday in Term 1.
Home Learning
In Year 6, Home Learning for English is set on a Monday to be completed by the following Monday. There will be two sheets to complete: one for reading skills and one for spelling.
In addition, children are expected to read daily.
Children will be given an Arithmetic sheet every Monday to be completed by the following Monday.
