School Council

At Greentrees, we believe that pupils’ views are important. One of the ways we promote effective pupil voice is through our School Council.

Each September, pupils in Year 1 to 6 vote to elect two representatives from each class to serve on the School Council. This provides children with a meaningful opportunity to participate in the democratic process and supports their understanding of the British Value of democracy.

The School Council is led by Mrs McKay at the Infant Site and Mrs Hawkins at the Junior Site. Representatives meet regularly to discuss matters that are important to pupils and to share the views and ideas of their classmates. We also provide opportunities for the Infant and Junior School Councils to work collaboratively on whole-school initiatives.

Through their work, School Council members help to:

• Represent the views of pupils across the school.
• Contribute ideas to improve school life.
• Promote positive relationships and a sense of community.
• Support initiatives that enhance pupils’ wellbeing, learning and school experiences.
• Encourage children to develop leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
• Help pupils understand and put into practice the British Values of democracy, mutual respect, individual liberty, the rule of law and tolerance.

The School Council’s priorities are reviewed each year and are informed by the views of pupils across the school.
