Collective Worship
Reflection Time is an inclusive part of school life and reflects our caring ethos and commitment to developing the whole child. It contributes to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, helping them to develop a greater understanding of themselves, others and the world around them. Through stories, discussion, music, celebration and moments of quiet reflection, children are encouraged to think deeply, appreciate different perspectives and develop a sense of wonder about the world.
Our Reflection Time programme is rooted in the broad Christian tradition and includes festivals and events from the Christian calendar. We also learn about and celebrate significant festivals and events from other faiths and cultures, helping pupils to develop respect, understanding and appreciation of the diverse communities in which we live. Reflection Time supports our school vision, promotes our shared values and encourages children to recognise how they can make a positive difference to others and to the wider world.
Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from Collective Worship. However, we hope this would be a last resort due to the important role Reflection Time plays in promoting inclusion, community spirit, reflection and personal development. If parents are considering withdrawing their child, they should first contact the school office to arrange a meeting with the Headteacher. This provides an opportunity to discuss the content and purpose of Reflection Time, ask any questions and, if desired, observe an example of Collective Worship.
If parents choose to withdraw their child from all or part of Collective Worship, this request should be made to the Headteacher. No reason needs to be given for the decision. The school will make appropriate arrangements for the supervision of any pupil who is withdrawn.
Please note that the right to withdraw applies only to Collective Worship. It does not extend to other aspects of school life or the curriculum where discussions about beliefs, values, faiths, cultures and worldviews may arise, including within subjects such as Religious Education, History, Geography and PSHE.
