At Greentrees, all junior-aged pupils are offered a range of instrumental tuition from peripatetic music teachers who visit the school on different days. Each teacher has written a short description of what they offer which you will find below. Please contact the teacher directly for further information.

There are subsidies available for those pupils eligible for free school meals and for those with special educational needs. Please contact the school office for more information. 

Brass Lessons

At Greentrees, Brass instruments are taught to year 5 in the form of a First Access project completely free of charge as part of their normal curriculum with instruments provided by the school in partnership with Wiltshire Music Connect. Every child gets to play either the Cornet or Baritone for 1 hour per fortnight. Instruments are not taken home.

Following information given out to year 5 in the summer term, a number of children choose to continue with lessons in year 6, usually in small group lessons. There is a choice of instruments, which can be hired at very reasonable rates from the county stock. Instruments played in Year 6 are usually Trumpet, Cornet and Baritone but in the past some children have opted for Trombone and Tuba.

Given that it is always better to wait for good second teeth at the front and reasonable physical strength, starting the project in year 5 and then taking lessons in year 6, if the interest is still there, works very well, saves parents money and very much reduces the risk of pupils giving up after a short time.

Guitar Lessons

Fun, weekly, classical / acoustic / rock guitar lessons on a one to one basis. These happen within the school day, during term time. During lessons, each child will learn to read Guitar TAB, music notation and develop their musical ear. Playing can be for pure enjoyment or working towards grades can be pursued.

What is needed for guitar lessons:

• ¾ size nylon strung guitar including protective carry case (These range from £60 upwards)
• Simple A4 folder in which to keep music.
• The Guitar Basic’s Book (approximately £9).
• Time to practise at home (at least three times a week for 10-15 minutes). 

Flute and Clarinet Lessons

Individual and shared lessons are available for beginners. I can arrange instrument hire through Wiltshire Council. Suitable from year 4 onwards. Limited space available before September.

Violin, Viola and Cello Lessons

Piano Lessons

I particularly love teaching beginners but I am also able to take on pupils who have previous experience. I teach through the Kodaly approach, teaching the fundamentals of music including, pulse, rhythm, pitch and dynamics with singing games, simple pieces and fun activities that students have so much fun they hardly notice they are learning.

Pupils will come out of class to their piano lessons and then return to class. Lessons will be on Monday mornings starting after half term.

Invoices are sent 1/2 termly. It is useful to have a piano at home, preferably one with full size keys rather than a keyboard but this should not be a barrier to your child learning.
