This week in Koalas Class: Week beginning 1st September
As Authors, we will be reflecting on what we know about punctuating our sentences correctly using full stops and capital letters.
As Authors, we will be exploring the books in our classroom.
Your child may wish to practise their Common Exception Words (CEWs) at home to support fluency and confidence in both reading and writing.
As Mathematicians, we will be reflecting on how to write numbers 0-20.
This week we will introduce our new Enquiry question: How can we lead a healthier life?
As Scientists, we will explore some of the different ways we can be healthy, such as physical activity and mindfulness.
Our PE days this term are: Mondays and Wednesdays.
Reading
Our weekly visits to the school library take place on Friday so please ensure your book is in school to swap that day.
Story Suitcases:
Each Friday, a pupil is chosen to take home a Story Suitcase. Inside the case, there is a story book, a book review notepad and a story prop. We ask that an adult read the story aloud to promote the love of reading. Children may enjoy using the prop to engage with the story while listening to it, or to re-enact it afterwards. Please encourage your child to reflect on the story. Perhaps they might write about their favourite character, or the part of the story they liked the most? Perhaps they might explain how the story made them feel? We ask that the story suitcase is returned to school on Monday morning.
Book Changes:
Children will have books changed once a week on the following day:
Monday – Chestnuts
Tuesday – Limes
Wednesday – Oaks
Thursday – Sycamores
Reading for pleasure:
In Year 2 we get to know these books really well. We have a daily story vote to decide which book gets read to us!

Our enquiry in Term 1 is ‘How can we lead a healthier life?’
This enquiry involves us being Scientists, Artists and Engineers.

Celebration Assemblies
In our weekly Celebration Assemblies at each site, we present awards, certificates or stickers for the following:
- Learner of the Week
- Birthdays
- Team Point Milestones
- Golden Mile
- Pen Licences
You are very welcome to join us for these assemblies in support of your child.
Maths Passports
We encourage children in Koalas to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:
Pupils in Koalas should bring their Maths Passport to school on Thursdays.
On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.
P.E
Our P.E days are Mondays and Wednesdays.
Home Learning
In Year 2, Home Learning is set on a Thursday and should be handed in completed by the following Monday for sharing and celebrating. Your child will have a home learning book to complete their tasks in. If tasks are completed electronically, please email them to the class teacher.
If one week your child does not have home learning set – it is expected that they will complete tasks from The On-going List (below) which is in the Home Learning Policy.
The On-going List:
- Listening to adults read stories.
- Reading (from reading book and other books/own literature – we recommend no more than 10 or 15 minutes). Please record with a H and sign the ‘Reading Record.’
- Reading and spelling from word cards.
- Practise reading and spelling year 2 common exception words.
- Mathletics
- Nessy/Reading eggs if allocated
- Answering questions from reading bookmarks
