This week in Bushbucks Class: Week beginning 7th September 2026

In English this week, as authors, we will be describing some of the characters in the book ‘Everdark’.

In Spelling this week, as authors, our spelling focus will be words whereby /th/ is spelled <the> at the end of words.

WOW WORDS
As authors, we develop our vocabulary by using ‘Wow’ words. These are words generated from our Whole Class Reading sessions. We have read a poem entitled ‘From my mouth going South’

In Maths this week, as mathematicians, the children will be learning about Place Value, the children will be partitioning numbers to 1000, using number lines to 1000, understanding thousands & representing numbers to 10,000.

Also this week…

This week we shall launch our enquiry, ‘What choices do people make?’ the children will be sharing what the already know about the human body, participating in some food tasting & naming seasonal foods.

Reading

This term, our class text is ‘Everdark’ by Abi Elphinstone. If anyone has a copy of this at home, please feel free to bring it into school to read along.

Our weekly visits to the school library take place on Monday.

We do all we can at Greentrees to share our love of reading. This includes sharing book recommendations with our friends. Please use the book review template if you read a book that you think someone else would enjoy. These may be included in our weekly Newsletter or termly Reading Round-up.

Celebration Assemblies

In our weekly Celebration Assemblies at each site, we present awards, certificates or stickers for the following:

  • Learner of the Week
  • Birthdays
  • Team Point Milestones
  • Golden Mile
  • Pen Licences

You are very welcome to join us for these assemblies in support of your child.

Maths Passports

We encourage children in Bushbucks to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:

We endeavour to check Maths Passports as often as possible.

On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.

P.E

Our P.E days are Mondays and Thursdays.

Home Learning

In Year 4, Home Learning for spellings and maths is set each week on Spelling Shed and Mathletics. In addition, children are expected to read daily, which should be signed by an adult. They will hand their reading record in on a Monday to be monitored. A team point is given for 3 readings a week and an additional raffle ticket for 5 times a week. These raffle tickets are added to the box and then a ticket is drawn in celebration assembly for a chance to win a book.

The activities are set on Spelling Shed on a Friday and team points will be given on the following Friday for participation.

The activities are set on Mathletics on a Monday and team points will be given on the following Monday for participation
