The Multiplication Tables Check, or MTC, is a statutory assessment for Year 4 pupils in England to assess their fluency in recalling multiplication facts. The assessment takes place within a designated two-week window in June. The test is an online, on-screen assessment where pupils have 6 seconds to answer 25 questions. The questions posed will be drawn from all multiplication tables at random. There will always be questions from the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 multiplication tables in each check. There will be no questions from the 1 times table. The 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables are more likely to be asked. 

The following 11 multiplication questions are most likely to appear in the check: 

6 x 6, 6 x 7, 6 x 8, 6 x 9, 6 x 12 

7 x 8, 7 x 9, 7 x 12 

8 x 9, 8 x 12 

12 x 12 

Access Arrangements: 

Children with additional needs, who have similar provision in their day-to-day learning at school, may be provided with specific arrangements including: colour contrast adjustment, font size adjustment, ‘next’ button (as an alternative to a 3-second pause, an adult to input answers, a question reader. 

Before the check: 

Prior to the check, pupils will be well-prepared in school. In Years 3 and 4 all tables facts are learnt progressively as a memorised phrase by repeating the sound pattern out loud. This happens daily using printed times table booklets. Rarely do these booklets get used in their entirety. We encourage pupils to take them home when the next booklet is started to encourage additional practice. We also encourage pupils to use Mathsframe as often as possible at home and in school. This is a website which looks very similar to the format of the MTC. This website allows pupils to choose a particular multiplication table or to try all times tables mixed (as questions will be posed in the real MTC). We recommend the default setting of answering 25 questions with 6 seconds to respond because this aligns with the check.

We aim to host two information sessions for Year 4 parents about the MTC in April each year. Please do all you can to attend one of these session to support us in preparing your child for this check.
