This week in Scorpions Class: Week beginning Monday 7th September 2026
As mathematicians, this week we will be looking at place value to 10,000,000, including value of digits, ordering and rounding. As authors, we will be reading our new class story: The Adventures of Odysseus and also looking at word types and vocabulary.
We will also be starting our new enquiry: What have we learnt from the Ancient Greeks?
This weeks spellings are: gallery, misery, bravery, battery, treachery, delivery, cemetery, discovery, jewellery. stationery.

WOW WORDS
As Authors, we develop our vocabulary by using ‘Wow’ words. These are words generated from our Whole Class Reading sessions. This week’s words include: tethered, sanctuary, alcove, prow, gestured, vigil
Home Learning
On a Monday, the children will be set a spelling and grammar sheet, and an LBQ maths activity to complete online . This will have a week to complete these.
Reading
This term, our class text is The Adventures of Odysseus by Hugh Lipton. If anyone has a copy of this at home, please feel free to bring it into school to read along.
Our weekly visits to the school library take place on Monday.
We do all we can at Greentrees to share our love of reading. This includes sharing book recommendations with our friends. Please use the book review template if you read a book that you think someone else would enjoy. These may be included in our weekly Newsletter or termly Reading Round-up.

In Year 6, we get to know the following books really well. These are the stories that we can choose from our reading area to read for pleasure.
Year 6 Enquiries
Our enquiry in Term 1 is “What can we learn from the Ancient Greeks?”
This enquiry involves us being Scientists, Historians and Artists.

SATs
Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) are taken by Year 6 pupils in May every year.
This year, SATs will be completed between Monday 10th and Thursday 13th May.
The timetable is as follows:
Monday 10th May: Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers 1 and 2
Tuesday 11th May: English Reading
Wednesday 12th May: Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic) and Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning)
Thursday 13th May: Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning)

Celebration Assemblies
In our weekly Celebration Assemblies at each site, we present awards, certificates or stickers for the following:
- Learner of the Week
- Birthdays
- Team Point Milestones
- Golden Mile
- Pen Licences
You are very welcome to join us for these assemblies in support of your child.
Maths Passports
We encourage children in Scorpions to practise their mental arithmetic as often as possible at home. Maths Passports are a good way to support this. Next to each skill in Maths Passports, there are three boxes to date. One for pupils (self-assessment), one for parents and the final one for teachers as follows:
We endeavour to check Maths Passports as often as possible.
On the Mathematics page, within the Curriculum menu, is a guide for parents to support the assessment of Maths Passport skills. Assessment tasks can also be downloaded and printed for use at home.
P.E
Our P.E days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Swimming will take place on a Tuesday in Term 1.
Home Learning
In Year 6, Home Learning for English is set on a Monday to be completed by the following Monday. There will be two sheets to complete: one for reading skills and one for spelling.
In addition, children are expected to read daily.
Children will be given an Arithmetic sheet every Monday to be completed by the following Monday.
